Chapter nineteen
“Wake up Peter.” Peter squeezed his eyes tightly before opening them. Sitting up he noticed the room he was in for the first time.
The walls were wooden planks stained a sort of burgundy, the floor matched. The room was long and had a high ceiling, furniture included the bed he was lying on, which was next to a window. A full length mirror stood in the far left corner closest to the door, a large desk stood underneath a bunk bed that had a ladder descending from it. Behind the bunk bed hung a long purple curtain which covered the rest of the room. Lye was standing in front of the mirror, combing her hair. The light from the window shone in and fell on her. Making it seem like she was standing in the middle of a spotlight.
“We have to get to school.” She said. Peter rubbed his eyes, he suddenly spotted his bags on top of the bunk bed. He stood up and slowly walked over to the bunk bed.
“School? Hey, ” Peter turned to look at Lye “why are my bags here?” Lye put her brush down on a dresser that almost blended into the wall, she turned to face Peter.
“Because, since all vampires are stuck in the attic. Like bats as those stupid werewolves, Blake, Wit and Olly, like to say. It is a rule that any new vampires stay in the same room as their master.” Peter raised his eyebrows before responding.
“Right, you’re my master?” Lye nodded.
“Yes,” she said “Master. Vampires are one of the most complicated species in the creature. Back to your earlier question, yes school. Just because you are going through the change doesn’t mean you can skip. They won’t allow it, no exceptions.”
“My body aches, I feel like my head is about to explode, and my throat is dry and is stinging.” Lye looked at Peter sympathetically.
“I know.” She said gently, Lye picked up her backpack, and Peter’s, she handed his to him. She looked Peter in the eye, her gaze no longer seemed to bore into him. Instead it somehow seemed to give him strength. “At school, you are going to have to breathe. Deep breaths, or it will be hard.”
Before Peter had a chance to ask her what she meant, she was already out the door. Peter’s head pounded with each step he took, going down both flights of stairs was pure agony. They entered the dinning room, and everything grew quite. Each person he laid his eyes on inhaled sharply. At first Peter was confused, until he remembered his golden irises.
A sharp pain shot through Peter’s heart when he looked at his friends, he then realized that they would no longer be as close as they had been. Peter noticed that his chair had been moved, it was right next to Lye’s. A strange coldness, that was also warm somehow, closed around his hand. Lye’s fingers intertwined with his. The tightness around Peter’s heart released its grip. That made the walk to their chairs easier. When the food had been laid, Peter stared at his drink. Supplement the word ran through his mind. He needed this to survive, he carefully picked up the delicate glass. Feeling the smoothness of the glass between his fingers.
The drink was sweet and a bit sticky, it ran down his throat like honey. A warmth filled Peter’s body and his soreness lessened, he looked at Lye who had been watching him. Peter smiled at her, she smiled back. The food was different, he now had close-to-raw sausages, toast with a thicker form of supplement spread on it like jam. There were also a small pile of eggs, or something that resembled eggs anyways. It also tasted odd, not bad, just different. All through breakfast Peter felt eyes on him, every time he looked up, the person would look away guiltily under his golden stare. No one talked for a long while, they were too shocked after the previous night’s events.
Eventually Peter couldn’t take the silence. “My eyes are pretty freaky now, huh?” He said. All heads turned to him.
“Yeah, sorta are.” Hayden said awkwardly. Peter turned his eyes on his best friend. Or was that former best friend? Peter’s eyes were pleading, it was as if he was telling Hayden I’m sorry. Hayden shook his head and gave Peter a small smile.
“Don’t worry,” Declan said. “You’ll get used to the eyes.”

Lye walked so close to Peter that their arms were touching. They entered the great doors of the school. Lye turned to Peter before heading to her brand new class that was on the second floor.
“Best of British.” Lye said. Peter smiled in response. He walked to his class, the aches had returned and his head was hurting worse than ever. These thoughts captured Peter’s attention, he came back to reality when he rammed into someone.
“Hey watch it!” The tall, thin kid said. The boy looked at his face, noticed his eye color and said. “Oh, sorry, um when did that happen?” He asked awkwardly, pointing at Peter’s eyes.
“Last night.” Peter answered. The boy’s eyebrows raised.
“Really? So, the secret is out now?” Peter nodded in response.
“In Dark Side Manor it is, I’m the first I’m guessing.”
“Yeah, you are the first. Congratulations. Who is your master?” The boy asked, he then introduced himself as Evan, spi-person, 16, Anubi Manor.
“Um, I suppose that Lye would be my master. Lye Moon.”
“Oh, Lye, she founded the school. Well, technically, she couldn’t ‘find’ the school since she looks so young, Dean Silk technically did. But she claims to our human parents that her great great great, lots more greats than I can count, grandfather founded the school.” Peter nodded.
“She told me that,” Peter said. “I guess it’s sort of cool to have a master that’s so important.” Evan wrinkled his eyes.
“Important, yes. Mean, absolutely.” Peter immediately came to Lye’s defense.
“She has her reasons.” Evan’s eyebrows raised again.
“If you say so.” Evan said. “I’ll see you around perhaps?” He said talking two steps backwards. Peter nodded and headed to his class. Mrs. Light walked in, and the school day began.
